All in all a classic from a time when everything coming out of Sweden sounded fresh and original, and a much more imaginative album than the band's later efforts might suggest. This is aggressive and melodic in the fine Swedish tradition now repeated ad nauseam by countless imitators. If you like the razor sharp thrust of At the Gates or Corporation 187 , then get this. |

The album created tours with well established acts such as MARDUK , DECAPITATED and ANGEL CORPSE . The Norse viking metal gods then went from strength to strength, constantly pushing the boundaries of what an extreme metal band can incorporate into its songs. Really good stuff. |

Looking back its easy to see this album as the bridge between the band's past and future. Each song follows a chaotic path held together under the all encompassing mystical concept, and with song titles in both English and Norwegian you could tell Enslaved had a tough time deciding to sever the ties with the blunt Viking Metal of old and embrace the new, shackle-free version of the band. In places it sounds reminiscent of latter day Carcass in its clinical coldness, but the result is an awesome set of crafted extreme Metal that relies as much on atmosphere as it does brutality. |

It might take a while to sink in but if you appreciate a bit of invention and experiment then you'll love this. Enslaved have basically become unclassifiable, but at the same time have gained a new found maturity and in doing so have raised their sound way beyond what most of their contemporaries could dream of. In the same way Emperor got more majestic with every release, so Enslaved get more graceful with age. |
